Superlights 2014 information

00:00 20-02-2014

Last year we started the Superlights class for lightweight Sportscars. It was something new for us, because for the last ten years we have been organizing races just for GT and Touring cars. The first year was a success in our eyes, so we have decided to continue the Superlights for 2014. During the 2013 season the Superlights class has proven to be a nice addition to the Supercar Challenge package, and we would love to make the Superlights class a success for this year and the years to come.

Last year we gained experience with the Superlights class, which was completely new for us. Some events saw larger starting grids than others, sometimes making it hard for us sometimes to realize our plans. At Spa Francorchamps the field was good because of a cooperation with the English Speed Series, the Dutch Sakers and the French Funyo’s, resulting in more than 40 cars in total. We need this number of cars to run a good championship.

For this year we think everything is well organised. The Superlights class will run at six events, with an option for a seventh event at Paul Ricard in southern France. We also have a broudcasting deal with MotorsTV in Europe and other tv channels in The Netherlands and Belgium.

We have been thinking about sub-divisions within the Superlights class. Our aim is to create three divisions in the Superlights, based on the weight/horsepower ratio of the car. We know this is hard to realise because the Superlights models all have very different aerodynamic packages. But for now, these are the subdivisions within the Superlights:

Sub 1:   Radical SR8 , Prage R1Turbo en de CN type wagens   (2:23.000)
Sub 2:   Radical SR3 en Praga R1 ( 2:31.000)
Sub 3:   Saker  ( 2:36.000)

Indicated is the laptime at Spa-Francorchamps in race trim. As organisation we have the right to add extra weight to a cars if we see that a car or driver is too fast compared to the other cars or drivers in that sub-division. Our goal is to create a championship with competition for everyone, also for the more experienced drivers.

Besides that we have a handicap seconds rule. Drivers finishing a race in the first three positions according to the provisional result, are allotted handicap seconds to be added to the 60 second mandatory pitstop duration for the next race(s). The winner of the race is given 15 seconds, the runner up 10 seconds and 5 seconds for number three. If a driver finishes outside the podium, the number of penalty seconds will be reduced with 5 seconds for the number four, 10 seconds for the number five and 15 seconds for the number six and others. Despite these deductions, the minimum pitstop duration will always be 60 seconds, to ensure safe driver changes without disadvantage for competitors sharing a car.

The Superlights 2014 calendar contains 6 events with 11 races:
18-19-21 April                   Easterraces Zandvoort, ( XFP45' - FP45' - Q30' - R1 60' - R2 60')

17-18-19 October            Acceleration Assen ( FP40'- Q30' - R1 55' - R2 60' )

We also have an option for a 7th event at paul Ricard. We are thinking about adding this event at the Superlights calendar.

22-23-24 August              Acceleration Paul Ricard  ( XFP45' -FP45' -Q30' -R180 of 240  Saturday night)

For this year we expect a lot more competitors for the Superlights class. We are in the final stages of negotiations with the organiser of the English SPEED series about integrating the SPEED series within our Superlights class. The SPEED series had more than twelve CN cars last year with drivers from England, France, Germany and Italy. Our target is to have a field with a minimum of 30 competitors this year. To reach this we are also working together with other European Sportscar Series organisers.

We would like to get in contact with interested drivers, so if you are considering joining the Superlights class this year please send an e-mail to [email protected] or call Dick van Elk at  +31 (0)6 5379 8219. We hope to make the Superlights class a good series but we need your help, so input is very much appreciated. Hope to see you at the track!
